The Clock is Ticking: Remember to Organize Your Home for the Holidays

With the holidays just around the corner, it is now time to look at organizing your home before you can sit back and soak in the holiday fun. Most people squirm at the thought of spending hours organizing and cleaning but the trick is to create a plan before you set off and tackle one part of your home organization before moving to the next. Organizing now will help ease the stress during the holidays.

Here is a quick guide to help you organize the most important areas of your home:

1. Organize the pantry – Holidays are all about the joy of baking, cooking and eating. Organizing your pantry will ensure that it is well stocked and sorted. Start by removing everything from the pantry and giving the shelves a good deep clean. Weed through the food stuff and remove anything that is expired or spoilt. Next, divide the pantry into sections like organic foods, baking goods, sauces and spices, etc. and rearrange the groceries. Place your bulk purchases like soda cartons or anything too heavy on the bottom most shelf. Label the jars and canisters clearly. Finally make a list of things you need to re-stock the pantry.

2. Organize the guest room – For most part of the year guest rooms are often treated like extra storage. Organizing the guest room to ensure a comfortable stay for your guests will make them feel welcome. The first step is to clear out the clutter from closets and drawers in the guest bedroom. Make space for them to keep their belongings. Change the linens and place extra blankets in the closet. Take time to clean the guest bathroom and put out some freshly laundered towels and toiletries. On the day of their arrival, make the room feel special with flowers and some small snacks. Don’t forget to leave a jug of water and glasses.

3. Organize the living room – Your living room will cater to the heaviest traffic during the holidays and is a reflection of your style and personality. Choose a theme for the holidays and decorate accordingly. Put away all the usual, year –round decorative pieces in the living room to make space for the holiday themed ones. Dust and clean the shelves, mantel place and side tables. Clean out your fireplace if you have one and get it professionally serviced if required. Is there enough space for everyone to be seated comfortably? Make arrangements for extra seating to avoid any last minute hassles. Finally vacuum the carpet and change the pillow cases.

4. Rev up the exteriors – The exteriors of your home should be just as beautiful as the interiors. The house should look warm and inviting to the guests coming to visit you. Rake and clean the entry way and if possible give it a good power wash. Re-paint the front door and the fence. Hang decorative planter baskets with perennials on the porch. Make sure that the house is well lit from the outside and replace any fused bulbs or broken fixtures. Decorate the exteriors with ornaments and wreaths close to the holidays.

Healthy Paint – Healthy YOU!

DC is definitely into the Green Movement! So much so that there are so many organizations and advocacy going on to make your head spin and turn green. Not to bore you further, but my favorite GREEN topic to discuss is eco-friendly wall paint. Not just any paint but low to zero VOC paint products.

You see, with most of us spending so much of our time indoors, a healthy room climate, free of poisonous emissions or long-term untested toxins, is very important in creating a home that encourages good health and vitality. We want that right? Particularly since bringing in the New Year we are looking at health as one of our top New Year’s resolutions!

Wall paints have some of the biggest impact on the interior environment. Why? Because historically, wall paints on the market contained high Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) which refer to solvents and other chemicals which evaporate into the air when in use. These VOC’s have been linked to many health problems such as asthma and skin conditions, and not to mention that nasty odor we all have experienced.

The good news is that here are so many great positive environmentally friendly paint products on the market today, some of which are outperforming well-known brands with zero to low VOC’s!

I want you not only to know that Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams and other well known brands have low to zero VOC paint, there are some lesser known brands owned by entrepreneurs who believe in healthy living!

Here are some you may consider:

YOLO Colorhouse, founded and operated by two women, Virginia Young (YO) and Janie Lowe (LO) in Portland, Oregon, was born out of a need for healthier paint and better color. They think of themselves as the “indie” paint company –and are dedicated to making paint that is better for us and the environment. Their colors are reminiscent of Feng Shui colors and the colors of nature. This is one of my all time favorite environmentally friendly products and has used it on several design products that I have managed with excellent results.

Anna Sova Food Paint is made from food! That’s right food! Here is a partial list of ingredients: Milk casein (as in yogurt), titanium dioxide (as in powdered donuts), food grade emulsifiers and preservatives (as in milkshakes and chocolates). Their environmentally friendly paint products do not contain dozens of the toxic ingredients necessary commonly found in high VOC paint products, such as crystalline silica, ethylene glycol, toluene, mutagens vinyl acrylics or acrylic copolymers. Their paints come in a variety of colors and finishes.

Gretchen Schauffler an artist, decided to create Paint Company called Devine Color Paints located in Seattle, Washington. Devine Paints brags that their paint goes on like yogurt and looks like chiffon”. The paint feels as yummy as it looks, and while it is thick and rich the colors are radiant and feel soft mainly because of its milky finish. I had a chance to see this paint product up close and personal at a boutique interior design store while visiting friends in the Seattle, Washington area over the Thanksgiving holiday. Absolutely loved the feel of this product and can’t wait to test it on a willing client’s home!

So don’t be afraid to try out new paint products and experience the difference. A healthy home means a healthier you!

Modernism in the New Living Room!

Thinking of adding a touch of chic and color to a space, well one should start with a nice sectional sofa range.  The Morini Style from Bo Concept offers a wide range of distinctive styles and comfort. With the ability to customize your own sofa to suit your own flair you are on the right track to creating your own contemporary space.

To add some style to that living room tries mix matching the furniture to give it a touch of your own personal flair. Try adding chairs like the Masonicus Chair and Armour Armless Club Chair from InMod .

These chairs paired up with the Mori sofa would give a space a little bit of elegance and edge to a living room.  Now no living room is complete without a coffee table or area rug so you should try some clear accents to compliment the colors and prints you have in the living space, such as the Discovery coffee table. The tempered glass uniquely shaped table will bring some more elegance to a space.

As for the area rug, InMod has a nice Celecot Area Rug. The shaggy white rug will complete the effect trying to be achieved in the space.

The softness and plush feel offered from the rug contributes to the texture and contemporary luxurious look.  Also, if you would like to make all your colorful pieces and prints pop a little more in the space, try a neutral color such as a light grey for the choice of wall color. Not only should you try a neutral color but paint only one wall to create a nice dramatic effect in the space you love.
