The Functional Art and Color of Oriental Rug Selection

Hadeed Oriental Rug Cleaning - Oriental Rugs

As we continue with National Color Therapy Month, we thought we would share this infographic courtesy of Hadeed Carpets on the different color variations of oriental rugs!  In addition, we are sharing a few tips on how to best select an area rug that will meet the specific needs of your home.

Design:
An empty room may be designed around an area rug, or a rug may put the final touches on an existing room. When designing a room around an area rug, use the rug colors to decide upon furniture, paint or paper color. A well-chosen area rug can coordinate patterns, furniture, and wall prints to complete a room design.

Color:
Furniture may be selected around rug colors and design. Area rugs are an effective method to mix patterns that have the same color palette. Deep colored area rugs provide warmth and intimacy, while lights colored rugs can open a room and provide a more spacious feeling. When selecting an area rug around existing furniture, bring a swatch of the predominant pattern in the room.

Size:
Evaluate the size of the space and the area to cover. Larger area rugs provide comfort and benefit acoustics in a large space. Area rugs also enhance areas in bedrooms, kitchens and other smaller areas that may require a splash of color or warmth.

Material:
There are a variety of area rugs made from synthetic and natural yarns.

Construction:
Machine-made area rugs are less expensive, yet similar in appearance to handmade area rugs.

Shape:
Circular and other uniquely shaped rugs can present a design alternative to rectangular or square shapes.

Candle Color Power: A Healing Tool for Your Interior

Combining the power of fire with the energy of color can be especially powerful, as there is no doubt that color affects us all.  Candles, a type of lighting that enhances Chi, bring light and warmth into a room, and provide an easy way to experiment with new colors and shapes.   Candles are also wonderful mood makers, whether it’s an introspective mood in the sanctuary, an intimate mood in the bedroom, or an atmosphere of warmth and good cheer in living and dining rooms.  The best candles are dripless, and either unscented or naturally scented.

Choosing the right candles can enhance the mood of your interior.

If you are working on achieving a feeling of peacefulness and balance in your home, you might choose something from the blue family.  If, on the other hand, you are visualizing lively energy permeating your space, you might want to use yellow or reds.  If you are seeking love or wish to conceive a child, you might want to burn a pink candle in your bedroom.  If you are trying to increase abundance, a green candle is helpful.  A yellow candle might enhance feelings of joy and friendliness.

Red candles can be used in a room if you want to stimulate physical activity.  For example, if you have a room or place in your home where you have exercise equipment and you want to increase your physical strength, you may want to burn a red candle in your bedroom and dedicate it to passion.

Different candle colors can enhance healing properties in your home.

Orange candles can be used in a room where family and friends will be gathering.  For example, you might want to burn an orange candle just before a party to stimulate friendliness and enthusiasm in the room.  You could dedicate this candle to joy and happiness for the evening ahead.

Yellow candles can be used in a room where you or your children study, or where you want to stimulate philosophical conversation or increased concentration.

Green candles are beneficial in any area where the family spends time as they create relaxation.  They are also helpful when used in the room of someone who may be sick.  Green candles stimulate feelings of balance, harmony, peace, hope, growth and healing.

Blue candles are excellent for bedrooms or for rooms where meditation is done.  Purple candles, like blue ones, are equally soothing.  In addition, this candle color is associated with psychic awareness and intuition.

Candlelight creates a warm and intimate ambiance, which is conducive to conversation.  Enjoy the romance of candlelight, not just in the dining room, but also in the bathroom.  Candlelight is very therapeutic, it creates a gentle and peaceful atmosphere that is in harmony with nature.

Healthy Paint – Healthy YOU!

DC is definitely into the Green Movement! So much so that there are so many organizations and advocacy going on to make your head spin and turn green. Not to bore you further, but my favorite GREEN topic to discuss is eco-friendly wall paint. Not just any paint but low to zero VOC paint products.

You see, with most of us spending so much of our time indoors, a healthy room climate, free of poisonous emissions or long-term untested toxins, is very important in creating a home that encourages good health and vitality. We want that right? Particularly since bringing in the New Year we are looking at health as one of our top New Year’s resolutions!

Wall paints have some of the biggest impact on the interior environment. Why? Because historically, wall paints on the market contained high Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) which refer to solvents and other chemicals which evaporate into the air when in use. These VOC’s have been linked to many health problems such as asthma and skin conditions, and not to mention that nasty odor we all have experienced.

The good news is that here are so many great positive environmentally friendly paint products on the market today, some of which are outperforming well-known brands with zero to low VOC’s!

I want you not only to know that Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams and other well known brands have low to zero VOC paint, there are some lesser known brands owned by entrepreneurs who believe in healthy living!

Here are some you may consider:

YOLO Colorhouse, founded and operated by two women, Virginia Young (YO) and Janie Lowe (LO) in Portland, Oregon, was born out of a need for healthier paint and better color. They think of themselves as the “indie” paint company –and are dedicated to making paint that is better for us and the environment. Their colors are reminiscent of Feng Shui colors and the colors of nature. This is one of my all time favorite environmentally friendly products and has used it on several design products that I have managed with excellent results.

Anna Sova Food Paint is made from food! That’s right food! Here is a partial list of ingredients: Milk casein (as in yogurt), titanium dioxide (as in powdered donuts), food grade emulsifiers and preservatives (as in milkshakes and chocolates). Their environmentally friendly paint products do not contain dozens of the toxic ingredients necessary commonly found in high VOC paint products, such as crystalline silica, ethylene glycol, toluene, mutagens vinyl acrylics or acrylic copolymers. Their paints come in a variety of colors and finishes.

Gretchen Schauffler an artist, decided to create Paint Company called Devine Color Paints located in Seattle, Washington. Devine Paints brags that their paint goes on like yogurt and looks like chiffon”. The paint feels as yummy as it looks, and while it is thick and rich the colors are radiant and feel soft mainly because of its milky finish. I had a chance to see this paint product up close and personal at a boutique interior design store while visiting friends in the Seattle, Washington area over the Thanksgiving holiday. Absolutely loved the feel of this product and can’t wait to test it on a willing client’s home!

So don’t be afraid to try out new paint products and experience the difference. A healthy home means a healthier you!

Color of 2011: Honeysuckle

Okay so Pantone the preeminent color guru announced the color for 2011! Honeysuckle! So what does that mean for interiors? I would suggest using that color in a small half bath to give it a sassy, bright, look. Another great use would be on accent pillows in a bedroom, sofa or a throw. A nice lamp base with that color would be great as well. A cute area rug in a study or personal space is wonderful as well.

Before & After

BEFORE: For this client, a burst of color, new furniture, balance and harmony was needed to change the mood of this dining room.

AFTER: I created energy balance through color and new furniture to bring a feeling of wholeness and connection to this dining room.

Celebrating National Color Therapy Month-2011

March is National Color Therapy Month!  So I along with many colleagues around the country are celebrating this month by educating the public about the therapeutic aspects of color in interiors!

You feel the benefit of being in a light and bright environment.  Not only does light affect your spirit, but it also benefits your physical health.  Light which reflects the seven rainbow colors has a profound affect on us every day.  We are reacting to color vibrations while we are awake and when we are asleep.  Color is a force in itself and one that penetrates every level of our being.  Although we are constantly interacting to color energy, it is rarely that we consciously use this powerful force to help us improve our quality of life and state of health.  Color is the first and most important means of creating a relaxed and harmonious atmosphere in our interiors.

Color Therapy used in our interiors teaches us how to create an aesthetically pleasing environment but also helps us feel good about ourselves.  We can use color to alleviate problems we have, whether they are mental, spiritual, physical or emotional.  This does not mean that we have to be ill in order to benefit from color therapeutics, but we can use it for creative and spiritual inspiration in our homes.

Throughout this month Kreative Koncepts will feature blog articles that will focus on our responses to color.  In addition, Kreative Ways & Solutions, LLC will feature some special events and classes to help you focus your interior color for healing.

Remember the colors you use in your environment can relax and heal, balance your emotions, aid learning and can be mentally stimulating or relaxing.

Come journey with me during this fascinating month full of color and magic!
