Four Quick & Easy Ways to Zen Your Space

Unlike what most people think, introducing a Zen sensibility to your space is quite easy.  Zen interiors mean living a simple lifestyle and design aesthetic that lends a calming effect to your home.  It does not require extensive remodeling of your home, just a few changes can create a huge impact.  Imagine bringing the serenity of your yoga class home!

Here are four quick and easy ways to Zen your space:

1) Live a clutter free life–  The first and probably most important rule of Zen decorating is getting rid of clutter.  The Japanese art of home decoration believes that clutter creates chaos and will not let your mind be at ease.  Clear everything that disturbs your line of sight.  Open spaces enhance the free flow of Chi-energy and it will instantly have a positive effect.  You will quickly realize the importance of a clutter free home.

2) Spare the bright colors– Zen decorating emphasizes the use of earth tones.  Your Zen home should be like a retreat where you can relax and feel at ease.  Bright colors disturb the balance.  Look for invigorating and fresh earthy tones like greens, browns and blues.  These are subtle yet soft making your home feel close to the outdoors.  Painting is the easier and most inexpensive solution to bringing in the Zen energy.

ZenElements

3) Use the Five Feng Shui Elements for your decor-  Zen decorating does not mean having a sparsely decorated, boring home.  In fact decorating with details is an interesting aspect of Zen principles.  Borrowing from the ancient Chinese art of placement, Feng Shui, the use  the the five elements earth, water, fire, mental and wood in your decor.  Bring in the wood element of a house plant which will add wealth as well as vibrancy and cheerfulness into your space.  Consider a mix of metal and wood for furnishings, accessories and  wall treatment inspiration.  Decorate your bare walls with serene paintings and photographs.  Limit your decor to one painting per room.  Use objects found in nature like rocks, shells and tree branches to creatively decorate your space.  You can also fill a glass bowl with shells for display on a mantel or shelf.

4) Organization and storage– Organization is another important aspect of Zen design.  An organized home will help you keep calm and feel at peace.  Take time to organize your closets, the kid’s room, drawers, refrigerator and the pantry.  These are some of the places where clutter tends to build up quicker than you think.  Make use of storage binds and boxes, label them neatly and create a place in the home for them.  When everything is neatly stacked and labeled, it will free your mind from small issues like finding birthday candles at the nick of time and will give you the opportunity to be at ease.

An Introduction to Zen Decorating

ZenDecor2

Zen decorating is a Japanese style of interior decor that embodies the values of minimalistic and simplistic living.  Does the word Zen transport you to a dreamy land of peaceful Buddahs and stress free living?  Then you are on the right track.  Applying Zen principles can help you break the stress and relax in familiar surroundings like your home or office.

A few basic principles can help convert your home or part of it into a Zen inspired space that feels like a retreat.  Here are four aspects of Zen decorating to get you started:

1) Minimalism- Decorating your home with Zen sensibilities means that you have to clear your surroundings of clutter down to the bare minimum.  Do away with knick knacks sitting on the console table, ornate displays of decorative pieces and even intricate wall papers.  The interiors must be unobstructed and filled with abundant natural light.  Think simplicity and open spaces.  Swap your exotic Victorian style furniture and upholstery with intricate patterns for simple textures and clean, straight lines.  Hide any disturbances in the room like electrical wiring and electronics that can cause stress.  This does not mean that you stop watching TV but simply place the TV in a cabinet with doors that can be shut when not in use.

2) Color Palette- Zen decorating takes its inspiration largely from nature.  Use warm, neutral colors to paint your walls.  Avoid any pops of bright colors as these will clash with the Zen style of design and disturb the balance.  Choose a muted, earthy color scheme for your upholstery, carpets and furniture as well.  Some of the most commonly used colors are creamy whites, coffee browns and shades of green.  Avoid stark colors like white and black, your palette should be warm and subdued.

ZenDecor

3) Nature Inspired Accents- Use minimal accessories to personalize your home.  When choosing accents, look for ones that represent the Zen elements of Feng Shui like earth, water,  fire, wood and metal.   Potted plants like bonsai and bamboo tend to create a tranquil atmosphere in the room and do not need a lot of care.  You can also place an indoor waterfall that creates a soothing trickling sound.  Fabrics made of natural fibers like wool, linen, and jute will ensure that your interiors are comfortable, warm and inviting.  Keep your walls free of intricate paintings and pictures.  If you want to hang a Zen inspired painting, limit it to only one per room.  Remember the rule of thumb- keep only what you really love, and harmonize with nature.

4) Lighting- Light is an important aspect to the Zen style of decorating.  Don’t block any natural sources of light like windows and sunroofs.  Avoid using drapes, instead you can opt for translucent screens that fill the room with abundant natural light.  For the evenings after the sun goes down, opt for wall sconces or pendant fixtures.  Instead of using only overhead fixtures that cast dark shadows, enhance the lighting by adding simple but modern wall sconces.  Dimmers can be used to set the mood.  Soft light and the scent from aromatic candles made of soy or beeswax will help you relax after a hard day of work.

In the next few weeks I will be focusing on Zen Decorating through a several videos.

Feng Shui Design for Abundance and Prosperity in 2014

We are just a few days away from the New Year and it is time to look forward to a prosperous and fulfilling 2014.  According to the Chinese calendar, this is the Year of the Wood Horse and the age old practice of decorating your home according to Feng Shui can help fill your home with abundance and prosperity.

To create good Feng Shui, base your interior design on the wonderful characteristics of the horse this New Year.  Horses are active and have abundant energy, they are bright, friendly and high spirited.  Horses are gentle and have a pleasing aura that is attractive to everyone around them.  Wild and carefree, horses are the epitome of elegance and sensuality.

Here are four Feng Shui ways to create abundance and prosperity for your home in 2014:

BrownGreenInterior

1.  Color- Since this is the Year of the Wood Horse, decorate your home in earthy shades of green and brown to bring good luck and prosperity.  The colors you use in your home should be in harmony with the element for the year, in this case, wood.  The shades of green and brown are both modern for the interiors and soothing for the eyes.  Use touches of blue and black to enhance your color scheme and add elegance.  Blue and black represent the element of water which supports the growth of wood.

2.  Material- Use natural materials to design the interior spaces of your home.  Look for wooden decor like wooden wind chimes, solid wood and bamboo furniture.  The natural grain and texture of the wood reflects the carefree nature of the horse that is adventurous and cheerful at the same time.  You can also use other natural decor like fur, feather and fabrics made with natural fibers like jute and linen.  You can also install stone sculptures to fill in awkward corners.  Natural materials will add depth to your decor.

BambooLighting

3.  Decorating ideas- The regal horse teaches us a thing or two about luxury and elegance.  Design your interiors to reflect prosperity, luxury and opulence to Feng Shui your home for wealth and abundance.  Look for high-quality fabrics with rich textures for your upholstery.  Decorate your home with crystals like turquoise, pearls and lapis lazuli.  Opt for unique shapes and unleash your create side.  Decorate in layers of similar colors to create a plush look.

4. Feng Shui area for 2014- The South- west area of your home is considered to be auspicious in the year 2014.  It is the area for Good luck, wealth and career.  Free this area of any fire element and Feng Shui fire decor.  Water elements in this area will energize the space and create good Feng Shui.  Decorate the area with water fountains and dragon turtles.  You can also place pictures of energetic horses.  Use this area of your home to strengthen your career and personal goals by placing a board that displays your vision for the future.  Certain Feng Shui charms like Chinese gold coins, money tree and wealth symbols like water and plants placed in this area are considered good for wealth and prosperity.

10 Easy Tips For Bedded Bliss

TTE1Photo Courtesy of The Tailored Nest

Many moons ago when down comforters became popular, I became a big fan right off the bat. One of the first things I discovered is how easy it is to make the bed. Just fluff and smooth and you’re done.

Secondly, I learned how simple and inexpensive it could be to dramatically change the look of the room by changing the bedding.  I change mine out with the seasons and sometimes for no reason other than I’m bored with what I’ve been using! You can use varying combinations of duvet covers, throws, shams, beautiful blankets and more.  Take a look at the bedding tips and tricks below to help inspire you to make your bed (and your room) beautiful every day.

1. Simplify the bedding: Skip the top sheet and use a down comforter with a duvet cover. Give the comforter & the pillows a quick shake and a smooth every morning.

2. Use a spritz of a nice linen spray: It’s a treat to slip into a fresh smelling bed.

3. Freshen your pillows: Once a week fluff them in the dryer on a low or no heat setting.

4. Even if you share a bed, make your side: I bet your significant other will soon follow suit.

5. No dual duty pillows: Make sure your decorative pillow shams have inserts that are made-to-fit the sham, then leave them there. Try not to use the same pillow to sleep on at night, then hurriedly try to stuff it into the sham when making the bed in the morning.

6. Time yourself making the bed: I bet it takes under 3 minutes.  A blink in time even on a rushed morning.

7. Backtrack to your bedroom: After you’ve made the bed, go back to your room and take a check of your mood.  The sight of your room will give you a little spring in your step.

8. Treat yourself to great linens and have them professionally pressed once in a while: There’s something about crisp, freshly ironed sheets that makes the bed feel a bit more luxurious.

9. Consider this longstanding French tradition: To ensure the longevity of your bedding rotate your sheets, with a set in the closet, a set on the bed, and a set in the wash.  This ensures that no one set receives more wear than another.

10. Add fresh flowers: Like fresh linens, fresh flowers make a room feel a little more lively, inviting and decorated.

Got Decorative Plates? Why Not Display Them?

????????????????????????????????????????Plates are an inexpensive, colorful way to add decoration to a room.  Take your most attractive ones out of the cabinets, and use these ideas to display them in your home.

  • Use plate hangers to arrange an arch of plates above a bed, the mantel, or a doorway.
  • Purchase small easels or specialty plate easels, so you can display decorative plates on any shelf or table.
  • Display plates, bowls, and glasses neatly in a glass-fronted cabinet.  To add extra drama, paint the interior of the cupboard in a contrasting color.  Items will pop and look especially beautiful.
  • Plate easels can also be employed in the glass cabinets so you see the decorative front part of the plates, instead of just the sides.
  • Line your plates up artistically on a counter.
  • Hang solid-colored plates on a patterned wall.  The solid colors will really pop.  But if the plate has an intricate design, make sure you hang it on a solid background.

????????????????????????????????????????

  • Arrange plates and bowls on open, stacked shelves.  Distribute color and size around the arrangement evenly.
  • Coordinating dishes can be displayed on a specialty plate rack, and hung as artwork.
  • To add a touch of formality, arrange plates on the wall in a symmetrical pattern.
  • Make use of your unmatched dishware.  Place single plates under plants as decorative saucers.  Use an odd teacup or bowl for a flower arrangement.  Use a pretty plate in the bathroom as a soap dish.
  • The right lighting will add drama to any plate display.  Make sure that room lighting is not pointed directly towards a hanging plate, or it may cause a glare.  Turn on the lights in the display cabinet.  If your cabinet doesn’t have lighting, you can install low-voltage lights, or even attach an inexpensive stick-up type.
  • Consider decorative plates for your outdoor space or patio.  Decorative plates can add color and punch to any outdoor space.

???????????????????????????????????????

It’s a shame to keep beautiful tableware out of sight.  Find unique ways to display your items so you and your guests can enjoy them every day.

How To Avoid The Most Costly Design Mistake in 2013

DanceyFamilyroom2.

The most costly mistake that homeowners make is starting an interior design project without a plan.  Taking on a new project without a plan is like trying to drive to a strange, faraway place without a map.  This will cause you delays, increase your frustration, and cost you a bundle.  Making a plan is a lot like having a navigation system to guide you along the way.

If you consider some important steps before beginning your home design venture, you can feel more confident that your project will go as planned.

Step One:  Choose a Mood

Many homeowners get stuck trying to figure out a style.  Instead, think about how you want to feel in the room.  Before choosing even one item, decide on the mood you want to achieve: casual and comfortable … formal and elegant … cheerful and whimsical…

After you’ve chosen your desired mood, make sure that everything you choose reflects it, and your final design is sure to turn out perfectly.

Step Two:  Find an Inspiration

Find one piece that really speaks to your heart.  It can be a painting, a piece of furniture, or an area rug.  Use this piece to keep your purchases on track.  Everything you buy for the room must coordinate with that one piece.  Sometimes a picture in a magazine can be your inspiration.  Make sure your overall plan is consistent with the colors, textures, and overall theme of the picture.

Step Three:  Plan your Budget (loosely)

Home projects rarely stay within the initial budget, but it is still important to set one.  You can feel more secure if you know approximately how much you are willing to spend for the entire project, and then plan for each separate item accordingly.

Step Four:  Make a List

List the items you are keeping for your room, and also ALL the pieces you need to purchase to complete the project.  You don’t need to buy everything at once, but you should have a list before you begin.  Relating back to this list during your project will keep you on track, and also keep you on budget!

You will find that making a plan and sticking to it will force you to stay on track and achieve your design goals.  This whole process is even easier if you can share it with friends or family.  Having support will get the job done more smoothly – and with a lot more fun.  Enjoy!

Six Strategies to Prepare for The End of The World Of Uninspired Home Design

Backyard Corner

Well it is the end of the world as we know it… well sort of.   According to the ancient Mayans, the end of the world is supposed to be December 20-21st.  However, I got news for you… the end of the world as we have known it from a consciousness level is no longer the agenda.

The year 2013  is about making a shift in the collective consciousness around the world.  In order to prepare, we will need more spiritual and energetic tools.  It is now going to be about listening to your intuition and being in touch with your spiritual self.   It is about moving to action instead of waiting for permission to move forward.

Inspired

This is a time for transformation, spirituality and understanding your place and your role in co-creating the universe.  This is the end of doing it all on your own.  It is about sharing and tapping as many resources as you can.  You will want to match your personal SHIFT with an environmental SHIFT.

To do this you must create an interior that fully supports the way you want to be, and the way you want to live in the world—one where you can really thrive and enjoy every aspect of your life, with spaces that function well, and allow you to tap into your true self and your authentic gifting.  So as you prepare mentally and spiritually for this exciting shift in the universe,  your home or office  interior must be in alignment for the abundance prepared for you in 2013.   To prepare your interior for the SHIFT here are six strategies:

  1. Discover your personal (and even professional) needs and goals.
  2. Create an action plan for setting up your interior environment so that these needs and goals will be supported and fully realized.
  3. Consider spaces that integrate personal hobbies, work, and creativity into your home.
  4. Incorporate design elements that can have an emotional and psychological effect on your well-being and productivity both within the home and outside of it.
  5. Know what your personal development colors are and how to integrate them in your interior.  There is nothing like having the right customized colors in your environment to help you thrive at your highest level.
  6. Find out what your Feng Shui Five Elemental make up is and the characteristics of your Chinese natal element chart is to be able remain balanced.

You know the trend of working from home virtually has changed the mindset of the workplace. The virtual work situation has placed us in environments where we can be stimulated to be more productive.   We now have some control over the spaces in which we work.  We want beauty around us.   Take the opportunity to shape your home office or out of home office bathed in beauty.

Tulips

Why not place fresh bouquets of  flowers or installing chandeliers in your home office in order stimulate your productivity?

To help you make that SHIFT in your interior for the post-2012 world, consider our Interior Environment Coaching and Feng Shui Design services to transform your old interior design consciousness to one that is in step with 2012 .  Our services are more than equipped to help you end the world of uninspired design to a world of spaces that inspire you.  Call us today to schedule your 30 minute FREE phone consultation at 1-888-280-8318 or email us at interiors@kreativeways.com.
