Four Ways to Love Yourself Through Your Environment

LovingYourselfPhoto

It is often said that your home is a reflection of your personality.  This Valentine’s Day consider a few changes in your home décor can cause a big change in your attitude and is a great way to explore and love yourself.  It gives you a chance to indulge in creativity and channelize your thoughts.  Our interiors elicit emotions like happiness, joy and peace which truly equates to loving oneself.

1.  Discover your likes and dislikes

The most important aspect of loving yourself through your environment is to learn more about your interior environment is to learn more about your likes and dislikes.  Spend time looking at pictures on the internet and in magazines and identify your interior style.  Follow your instincts and create a home that truly reflects your persona. There is no right or wrong in interior design, it is after all your home!

2.  Choose colors that help you feel motivated.

What would life be without colors?  An important aspect of your interior environment, different colors are linked with different feelings and emotions.  Pink is the color for love and promotes a feeling of comfort in uncertain times.  Decorate your home with accents of pink to feel the love.  Similarly, orange is a beautiful color to use when you want to feel younger.  Light purple is the color for spirituality and will deepen your sense of gratitude.

3.  Create a gallery wall

Happy photographs will stimulate an emotion of happiness and contentment.  Print pictures from memorable events in your life and create a gallery on a blank wall.  This will give you a reason to smile every time you look at the photos.

4.  Indulge in a cozy corner for yourself

Every now and then we all need some self-indulgence.  Create one such corner in your home where you can retreat to be with yourself.  Choose a corner in your home and place a comfortable chair, a reading light and a stack of books.  Once in a while, give yourself the liberty to cozy up in a throw with a mug of hot chocolate in your little corner.

I was fortunate to be one of 75 great authors who co-wrote the book the Art & Science of Loving Yourself First:  Cause Your Business Should Complete You Not Deplete You.

In this book, I wrote a chapter on “Supportive Space.”  To purchase a copy of the book click here:

Decorating with Pantone’s Color of the Year- Radiant Orchid

Whether you are someone who seeks inspiration from trends or someone who believes in creating their own trends, you cannot miss Pantone’s color of the year- Radiant Orchid.  A gorgeous mix of purple and pink, Radiant Orchid will require you to stretch your creative thinking abilities.  It is a charming color that is packed with energy and luxurious charm.

Here are a few ideas to introduce Radiant purple in your home decor:

1.  Splashes here and there-

If you are afraid to incorporate the color of the year in your decor, the easiest way is to introduce splashes of the color here and there.  When you “grow into” the color, you can choose to move to the next level or eliminate it all together.  Next time you visit the florist, pick a bunch of purple orchids and voila, you have just added the trending new shade into your home decor.

2.  Use as a luxurious accent-

Although Radiant orchid is a bright and vivacious color, it will be a bold decision to cover your entire room in this shade of purple.  The color can get boring very easily, therefore it is best to use it as an accent.  Radiant orchid radiates a royal feel and luxurious fabrics like velvets and damasks that incorporate this shade of purple will work well for upholstering ottomans and dining chairs.  You can also drape your armchair with a mohair throw in radiant orchid for a touch of opulence.

3.  Not so feminine-

A lot of people are afraid of the pink undertones in radiant orchid.  It is being touted as a feminine color for interiors.  But the great thing about Radiant orchid is that is can easily swing between feminine and very masculine.  Use radiant orchid in conjunction with reds, yellows, and oranges to bring out its charming, feminine side.  But the color becomes very masculine and bold when paired with glossy blacks, grays and dark browns.

4.  In the kid’s bedroom-

If there is one room in your home that can pull off a coat of radiant purple from ceiling to floor, it is the kids’ bedroom.  The color is bright and will bring energy to the room.  When painting the entire room in radiant orchid, it is important to keep the other decor muted.  White works best with radiant orchid in the kids’ room.  Remember, too much of color can be disturbing for the child.

5.  Cool off the kitchen-

Radiant orchid is a beautiful mix of blue and red.  The blue hue in the color has a cooling effect, therefore it is very well suited for use in the kitchen.  Consider using cabinets with a glossy Radiant orchid finish paired with black and white.  You can also paint an accent wall in the kitchen in this shade to add a punch.

An Introduction to Zen Decorating

ZenDecor2

Zen decorating is a Japanese style of interior decor that embodies the values of minimalistic and simplistic living.  Does the word Zen transport you to a dreamy land of peaceful Buddahs and stress free living?  Then you are on the right track.  Applying Zen principles can help you break the stress and relax in familiar surroundings like your home or office.

A few basic principles can help convert your home or part of it into a Zen inspired space that feels like a retreat.  Here are four aspects of Zen decorating to get you started:

1) Minimalism- Decorating your home with Zen sensibilities means that you have to clear your surroundings of clutter down to the bare minimum.  Do away with knick knacks sitting on the console table, ornate displays of decorative pieces and even intricate wall papers.  The interiors must be unobstructed and filled with abundant natural light.  Think simplicity and open spaces.  Swap your exotic Victorian style furniture and upholstery with intricate patterns for simple textures and clean, straight lines.  Hide any disturbances in the room like electrical wiring and electronics that can cause stress.  This does not mean that you stop watching TV but simply place the TV in a cabinet with doors that can be shut when not in use.

2) Color Palette- Zen decorating takes its inspiration largely from nature.  Use warm, neutral colors to paint your walls.  Avoid any pops of bright colors as these will clash with the Zen style of design and disturb the balance.  Choose a muted, earthy color scheme for your upholstery, carpets and furniture as well.  Some of the most commonly used colors are creamy whites, coffee browns and shades of green.  Avoid stark colors like white and black, your palette should be warm and subdued.

3) Nature Inspired Accents- Use minimal accessories to personalize your home.  When choosing accents, look for ones that represent the Zen elements of Feng Shui like earth, water,  fire, wood and metal.   Potted plants like bonsai and bamboo tend to create a tranquil atmosphere in the room and do not need a lot of care.  You can also place an indoor waterfall that creates a soothing trickling sound.  Fabrics made of natural fibers like wool, linen, and jute will ensure that your interiors are comfortable, warm and inviting.  Keep your walls free of intricate paintings and pictures.  If you want to hang a Zen inspired painting, limit it to only one per room.  Remember the rule of thumb- keep only what you really love, and harmonize with nature.

4) Lighting- Light is an important aspect to the Zen style of decorating.  Don’t block any natural sources of light like windows and sunroofs.  Avoid using drapes, instead you can opt for translucent screens that fill the room with abundant natural light.  For the evenings after the sun goes down, opt for wall sconces or pendant fixtures.  Instead of using only overhead fixtures that cast dark shadows, enhance the lighting by adding simple but modern wall sconces.  Dimmers can be used to set the mood.  Soft light and the scent from aromatic candles made of soy or beeswax will help you relax after a hard day of work.

In the next few weeks I will be focusing on Zen Decorating through a several videos.

Here is the first on how to accessorize a Zen inspired console:

10 Easy Tips For Bedded Bliss

TTE1Photo Courtesy of The Tailored Nest

Many moons ago when down comforters became popular, I became a big fan right off the bat. One of the first things I discovered is how easy it is to make the bed. Just fluff and smooth and you’re done.

Secondly, I learned how simple and inexpensive it could be to dramatically change the look of the room by changing the bedding.  I change mine out with the seasons and sometimes for no reason other than I’m bored with what I’ve been using! You can use varying combinations of duvet covers, throws, shams, beautiful blankets and more.  Take a look at the bedding tips and tricks below to help inspire you to make your bed (and your room) beautiful every day.

TTE2Photo Courtesy of The Tailored Nest

1. Simplify the bedding: Skip the top sheet and use a down comforter with a duvet cover. Give the comforter & the pillows a quick shake and a smooth every morning.

2. Use a spritz of a nice linen spray: It’s a treat to slip into a fresh smelling bed.

3. Freshen your pillows: Once a week fluff them in the dryer on a low or no heat setting.

4. Even if you share a bed, make your side: I bet your significant other will soon follow suit.

5. No dual duty pillows: Make sure your decorative pillow shams have inserts that are made-to-fit the sham, then leave them there. Try not to use the same pillow to sleep on at night, then hurriedly try to stuff it into the sham when making the bed in the morning.

6. Time yourself making the bed: I bet it takes under 3 minutes.  A blink in time even on a rushed morning.

7. Backtrack to your bedroom: After you’ve made the bed, go back to your room and take a check of your mood.  The sight of your room will give you a little spring in your step.

8. Treat yourself to great linens and have them professionally pressed once in a while: There’s something about crisp, freshly ironed sheets that makes the bed feel a bit more luxurious.

9. Consider this longstanding French tradition: To ensure the longevity of your bedding rotate your sheets, with a set in the closet, a set on the bed, and a set in the wash.  This ensures that no one set receives more wear than another.

10. Add fresh flowers: Like fresh linens, fresh flowers make a room feel a little more lively, inviting and decorated.

Sophistication, Grace and Hefty? Indoor-Outdoor Living and Entertaining

For the homeowner with a patio, deck or other outside social area, decorating can be both a challenge and an exciting opportunity. You might be wondering how to turn your plain porch into a paradise and enhance your outdoor living.

1. Fine Living – Imagine this: You’re throwing a tea party outside on your lovely patio and just as your guests sit down in your comfortable porch chairs, you serve them their first course on… paper plates. The paper plates kind of ruin it, huh? When decorating for outdoor living you’ll want to make it as comfortable and inviting outdoors as you would indoors. Bring out the china, the candles, placemats, napkins, crystal and fresh flowers. It’s the ultimate in luxury and entertaining. When your guests are used to eating from paper plates, you serve them on fine china. What a treat! It’s easy to experience sophistication and grace when entertaining outdoors, but it’s hard to do on Hefty™ brand paper plates.

2. Be a Softy – Just as you would when decorating indoors, remember to balance your hard and soft elements in your outdoor decorating. If your outdoor environment is a concrete slab with hard metal furniture, bring in soft goods like seat cushions, chair pads, pillows, place mats, and even simple drapery panels. Look to soften your outdoor ‘room’ to make it more comfortable and inviting.

3. Select the Right Fabric – Outdoor living that withstands the elements is easy to achieve when selecting the right fabrics. There’s a big difference between indoor and outdoor fabrics. Whereas cotton is a durable, natural fabric, it can fade and mildew. Outdoor fabrics on the other hand have been reinvented! They don’t fade, are easy to clean, soft to the touch, repel mold and they hold up beautifully to the elements. Great for seat cushions, table covers, runners, place mats, napkins, drapes, pillows and even overhead canopies. Many of my clients like to even use them indoors!

4. Accessories – Finding attractive accessories that can withstand the elements can be a challenge. But don’t think you have to restrict your shopping to your local ‘garden center’. Scour salvage yards, antique shops, consignment stores and garage sales for fun, unique pieces to use outdoors. Look for opportunities to use common elements in unusual ways. Just remember that by leaving them outside more than likely they’ll deteriorate faster. Just keep that in mind when considering how much to pay for the pieces.

Great outdoor decorating gives you another room to decorate and enjoy once the weather warms up. It provides an opportunity to tap into your creativity and expand on your home’s presence beyond your typical 4 walls. Outdoor decorating is not hard to do when you remember to embrace the elements of the outdoors, not run from them. And don’t forget to break out the fine china! You and your guests will be glad you did!

Got Decorative Plates? Why Not Display Them?

????????????????????????????????????????Plates are an inexpensive, colorful way to add decoration to a room.  Take your most attractive ones out of the cabinets, and use these ideas to display them in your home.

  • Use plate hangers to arrange an arch of plates above a bed, the mantel, or a doorway.
  • Purchase small easels or specialty plate easels, so you can display decorative plates on any shelf or table.
  • Display plates, bowls, and glasses neatly in a glass-fronted cabinet.  To add extra drama, paint the interior of the cupboard in a contrasting color.  Items will pop and look especially beautiful.
  • Plate easels can also be employed in the glass cabinets so you see the decorative front part of the plates, instead of just the sides.
  • Line your plates up artistically on a counter.
  • Hang solid-colored plates on a patterned wall.  The solid colors will really pop.  But if the plate has an intricate design, make sure you hang it on a solid background.

????????????????????????????????????????

  • Arrange plates and bowls on open, stacked shelves.  Distribute color and size around the arrangement evenly.
  • Coordinating dishes can be displayed on a specialty plate rack, and hung as artwork.
  • To add a touch of formality, arrange plates on the wall in a symmetrical pattern.
  • Make use of your unmatched dishware.  Place single plates under plants as decorative saucers.  Use an odd teacup or bowl for a flower arrangement.  Use a pretty plate in the bathroom as a soap dish.
  • The right lighting will add drama to any plate display.  Make sure that room lighting is not pointed directly towards a hanging plate, or it may cause a glare.  Turn on the lights in the display cabinet.  If your cabinet doesn’t have lighting, you can install low-voltage lights, or even attach an inexpensive stick-up type.
  • Consider decorative plates for your outdoor space or patio.  Decorative plates can add color and punch to any outdoor space.

???????????????????????????????????????

It’s a shame to keep beautiful tableware out of sight.  Find unique ways to display your items so you and your guests can enjoy them every day.
